2005-2010
Switzerland, France and Germany: In and around Geneva and Basel
Jul-Aug 2010
South Africa and Namibia: Cape Town to Windhoek
With the World Cup just over and the world's gaze on South Africa averting, for our first real African adventure we bucked the global trend by focussing on the Rainbow Nation and its near neighbour.
Jul 2010
Iceland
Escaping a week of summer heat in our stuffy attic flat by taking off to the Land of Fire and Ice.
Jun 2010
Croatia: Split to Dubrovnik
I couldn't say exactly what ingredients make up my ideal trip, as I suppose they change as I get older. But for both Katie and I, the Dalmatian coast was as close to perfection that we could ever hope to find.
Jun 2010
England: Cotswolds
Far and away the prettiest part of England I've seen to date.
May 2010
Italy: Florence and Chianti
Braving Italy's roads for the second time in four months in order to take Katie's best friend from college, on a quick visit from the US, down to her dream destination.
Unfortunately in reality it was smellier, dirtier and a tad less idyllic than she'd been led to believe... |
Nov 2009
Norway: Stavanger
A quick visit to see Arne on his home turf.
Oct 2009
Netherlands and Belgium: Amsterdam and Bruges
After a week long training course in Amsterdam we had the chance to spend the weekend tracking down the headstone of my great-grandmother's brother killed in WW1 on the France/Belgium border and wander along the canals of Bruges.
Jul-Aug 2009

Scotland

I promised myself at the end of 2004 I'd get back and give Scotland a more thorough going-over, and so here we are.
Jul 2009

Sweden: Stockholm
In Scandinavia's most beautiful city with my beautiful wife on our beautiful anniversary. Just beautiful.

Brief stopovers on my way to Melbourne and return.
Jan 2009

Australia: Home again, home again
Around Tasmania a little more and the obligatory pitstop to catch up with friends in Sydney.
Jul 2008
United States and Canada: New England and Quebec
With Katie studying in the US over the summer, this was the perfect opportunity for a trip to celebrate our first anniversary.

Katie and I get hitched.
Apr 2007
Grenada
Attending six matches of the Super Eights stage of the Cricket World Cup in the West Indies, and exploring this Caribbean island on non-match days. It's "the game of love and unity" if the tournament theme song is to be believed.
Dec 06-Jan 07
Australia: Back home again for a while
I bring the Southern Belle on her first trip to the real Great Southern Land, stopping in Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney.
Nov 2006
Portugal: Coimbra and Luso
A weekend for reflection in Buçaco National Park.
Aug-Sep 2006
England and Norway
Two weddings in four days, the chance to finally get to the Norfolk village my Grandad was born in and my second fortunate encounter with the Northern Lights.
Jun 2006
Germany: Stuttgart and Cologne
Sampling a little of the atmosphere of the 2006 soccer World Cup. A tense draw with Croatia in the their final group game meant the Australian dream continues into the knockout phases.
Apr 2006
Austria and Slovakia: Vienna and Bratislava
Erkki, Katie and I head east for Easter to visit Maria.

Italy: Cinque Terre

A birthday trip to the Italian coast.
Dec 05-Jan 06

United States: Boston and Memphis

My first Christmas away from home. I'd never really planned to ever go to Seppo-land, but then this Aussie Yobbo met a Southern Belle and everything changed.
Aug 2005
Germany: Schloss Neuschwanstein
A childhood dream realised, visiting the fairytale castle immortalised in one of our jigsaw puzzles.
Dec 04-Feb 05
Australia: Back home for a while
Andrew and Kathleen's wedding brought me back to Hobart and Sydney for time to recharge the batteries before heading back out to the great unknown.
Nov-Dec 2004
Morocco
Carpets, Roman ruins, carpets, the tanneries of Fes, carpets, camel trekking in the Sahara, carpets and snake charmers in Marrakech. Oh, and did I mention the carpets?
Nov 2004
Turkey
The next stop on my magic carpet ride. Hello from Troy, from Troy (hee hee hee!).
Oct 2004
Ireland: Dublin and Belfast
My 'chase the warmth' strategy coming into the Northern Hemisphere winter took a slight detour. International Rules in Dublin (Ireland v Australia in a hybrid Gaelic/Australian Football tussle), a Scandi Contiki mini-get-together and a day tour to Belfast (a city I've always had a somewhat morbid fascination about).
Sep-Oct 2004
Southern Spain and Portugal
My first real exploration of the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal in particular totally won me over, as it's unpretentious, relatively cheap, run-down in parts without being squalid and complemented by a strange love of bathroom tiling as an exeterior facade for residential apartment terraces.
Jun-Jul 2000
Western Europe
My first big overseas trip. A European appetiser of as much as I could possibly cram into a month.
